Subject: Re: THE PARKIE STORY To Fluerette, Phil Donahue, 60 Minutes, etc., it HAS been done before, but there wasn't the potential of a Udall bill being passed before, and that's the difference. The idea is to generate interest and support, to let people know that no one is immune and to get government funding for research. Regarding causes, and whether PD runs in the family, the Parkinson Disease Newsletter of Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, NY, Winter '96-97 states that, Dr. Russell Swerdlow of the University of Virginia, and his associates have noted a genetic defect in a component of the DNA of people with Parkinson's. Referring to a possible environmental connection, he noted that "this may explain why some individuals develop Parkinson's Disease following toxin exposure, while others do not." Only research will provide the answers!
