JUMP START YOUR BRAIN WITH PHOSPHATIDYLSERINE

Daniel F. Lewis

Having difficulty remembering telephone numbers you used to know? Nam=
es?
Putting names to face? One of the most frightening aspects of growing=
 older
is experiencing a decline in cognitive abilities. As we age, we can l=
ose as
much as half of our ability to perform everyday tasks related to memo=
ry and
the capacity to think and reason. BUT today, getting older does not
necessarily have to mean getting senile!!! Researchers are working ha=
rd to
understand how nutrition can help preserve an active mind. One of the=
 latest
advances in smart nutrients is Phosphatidylserine. This supplement ha=
s been
found to jump start the memory process and slow down mental decline
associated with the aging process.=20

The Smart Supplement

What is Phosphatidylserine?

Phosphatidylserine, commonly referred to as PS, is a phospholipid fou=
nd most
concentrated in brain cells. Phospholipids are generally a special ca=
tegory
of fats that are essential components of cell membranes. PS is chemic=
ally
related to other phospholipids, such as phosphatidylcholine,
phosphatidylethanolamine, and phosphatidylinositol.=20

How Does it Work?

When PS is given orally, it is rapidly absorbed and readily crosses t=
he
blood-brain barrier. In the brain it appears to act exclusively in ce=
ll
membranes, the major work surfaces of all known cells. Nerve cells
especially depend on PS to carry out their specialized functions incl=
uding:
the generation, storage, transmission and reception of nerve impulses=
. These
impulses are essentially electrical currents of a thought which are r=
elayed
=66rom cell to cell. In all this process, membrane proteins play a ke=
y role,
and PS regulates the activities of such proteins. In essence, PS shar=
pens
the mind by helping the membranes of the brain=92s nerve cells functi=
on better.=20

A Recent Breakthrough

Until recently, the only way you could get PS was from vegetable-deri=
ved
phospholipids, such as lecithin, which contained only trace amounts o=
r a
bovine-derived product with potential safety problems. The body produ=
ces
limited amounts of PS but with a substantial expenditure of energy. N=
ow,
thanks to a significant breakthrough, PS is finally available in
concentrated form. The new concentrated PS is derived from a safe and
effective source...soybeans.=20

Clinical Studies

PS has been well studied as a cognitive enhancer in both animals and =
humans.
In 1991, Thomas Crook, Ph.D. and his colleagues gave volunteers, rang=
ing in
age from 50 to 75, 300 mg/day (100 mg in three equal doses) of PS vs.=
 a
placebo group. After 3 months of this double blind study, average lev=
els of
memory impairment improved significantly in the PS group. Those patie=
nts
with the worst memory lapses improved the most if they had received P=
S.
Benefits persisted at least four weeks after PS was stopped. A surpri=
sing
finding from many studies was that PS at levels as low as 200 mg. per=
 day
could still provide beneficial effects as long as three months after =
the
subjects stopped taking it. Many other studies have clearly shown tha=
t PS is
an effective treatment for:=20

When all trials are evaluated the results are clear: in mature adults=
 PS may
help maintain cognition, concentration, and related mental functions.=

Supplementing with PS

Seniors, Boomers & Students

Practically all of us, who are interested in maintaining and maximizi=
ng our
mental abilities, can benefit from PS. Results form clinical research
indicate that PS is a premier candidate for inclusion in any program =
aimed
at supporting cognitive functions.=20

How Much?

100 to 200 mg twice daily. When combining smart supplements you may w=
ant to
reduce the dosage.=20

Safety

Safety and toxicology studies have shown that PS is a remarkably safe
dietary supplement. In a few cases, taking 200 mg or more as a single=
 dose
had lead to mild nausea. This effect can be minimized by taking PS wi=
th
meals. The new concentrated form of PS is derived from soy which has =
a long
history of safe use in dietary supplements and food.=20

P.S. Don=92t Forget About PS

Some degree of decline in cognitive function, such as memory, learnin=
g, and
concentration, is part of the aging process. By some estimates indivi=
duals
may lose as much as half of their cognitive abilities with the passag=
e of
time. There is no reason to watch memory and mental ability simply fa=
de away
as the years pass. Phosphatidylserine appears to be extremely promisi=
ng for
the aging mind. It is especially useful when combined with vitamins,
minerals, and other nutrients, along with exercise and a healthy diet=
. So
take advantage of the latest finding and preserve your mind so you ca=
n reach
the goal of =93dying young as late as possible=94.=20
