Oooops! I emailed a follow-up to the list a few days after completing the second week of testing with Flagyl. Since my ISP is The Microsoft Network, which had a major system upgrade going on for over a week (ended last nite) with a terrible disruption in email service (messages lost in somewhere Cyberspace), I'll presume mine to be one of those floating around in the void of the ether, and I'll repost the information again. Flagyl Update follows: NOTE: This is a "one-person, casual test," and is not a medical study. It is not guaranteed to work for everyone with PD. Consult your MD before trying any such test as this. I spent one week of treatment on the MD-prescribed antibiotic Flagyl for an non-PD-related infection. During that week I experienced several days with almost no PD symptoms. In fact, I felt "normal" for the first time in years. The following week I went off Flagyl for the entire week with a subsequent return of the PD symptoms and that "PD feeling." The third week, I went back on Flagl (with the infection long gone.. this was just to test the phenomena I'd experienced), and again experienced relief from most of the PD symptoms. I've been off the Flagyl completely now for a coupla weeks and the PD symptoms are back - no better and no worse than before. During the third week of my test I spoke with my MD and the clinical pharmacist at Kaiser Permanent, the HMO I belong to, about continued use of the Flagyl, and was advised this drug was not to be used continually due to potentially severe and permanent side effects. Based upon that discussion, I decided not to pursue continued use off the drug for symptomatic PD relief. In February Barbara Mallut wrote: "I went to the MD last Friday, Feb. 21, with what turned out to be an infection. I was prescribed FLAGELLA 500mg to be taken 2 times daily for one week. Within 36 hours of beginning the drug, I began to feel physically "light..." as in "airy." This was an entire-body-experience. By the following day, after I'd taken the Flagyl for two full days and one 1/2 day (totaling 5 tablets at that point), I felt strange and after thinking about it for a bit, realized that the "strange feeling" was the fact that I felt NORMAL... i.e. much as I did before the PD struck." Did I miss a follow up to this? What ended up happening with the Flagella, Barb? Did you continue on it? Did it have any lasting effect? Aloha, Joan Dykstsra (56/8/Eldepryl, Amantadine)
