I am a caregiver for a dear friend who has Parkinsonism Plus (64/2yrs.).
Original diagnosis was Parkinsons. Then a specialist surmised it was
Progressive Supranuclear Palsy--a more troubling diagnosis, based in part on
a purported fixation of eye movement. The current neurologist states that it
is not PSP (he does not find the tell tale eye problems) but is Striatonigral
Degeneration--a condition more severe than Parkinsons but less severe than
PSP. The PSP and Striatonigral Degeneration
diagnoses were in part based on the fact that the traditional Parkinson
medications (Permax, parlodel etc.) did not work. A new neurological
consultation has been arranged for Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in NYC.
Has anyone heard of any medications that help in
Striatonigral Degeneration or other Parkinson Plus conditions. Or any
treatments that reduce the slowness of movement. I have heard that
experiments are underway to produce a drug or to permit a fetal transplant
that will cause nerve regeneration but this seems quite a ways off.
Any information on these subjects would be greatly
appreciated. I find that the List is of great help in many areas and I am
very grateful for the members sharing their experiences and offering mutual
support.
                   Thank you very much.
