Found these two articles in the Economist - a great mag. Jan 4, 1997 William Pardridge , Brain Research, U of California sending drugs across blood-brain barrier using monoclonal antibody as molecular roof-rack on protein called transferrin which transports iron and manganese across barrier. He increases transfer by stuffing drugs in liposomes(fats) and attaches liposomes to the antibodies - At Neuromedica, Conshohockon. Pa., Dr. Shashoua is working with Doprexin - a combination of DHA and dopamine - by attaching it to a receptor that transports DHA across the barrier. This is a very digested report - I suggest you get the original article. THe importance is in the non-invasive method of getting drugs to the brain. Allan Goldman [log in to unmask]
