This is the text of the joint proclamation by our mayor and county executive that was presented at our symposium on March 15: Whereas: The Parkinson's Support Group of Upstate NY Inc., a chapter of the National parkinson's Foundation proposes and requests the support of communities and government for the passage of the Morris K. Udall Parkinson's Research Funding Bill; and Whereas: The 1997 Udall Bill, if approved by Congress, will increase funding for Parkinson's research in order to establish Parkinson's Research Centers accross the country, a databank and information clearinghouse, and a National Parkinson's Disease Education Program; and Whereas: The Morris K. Udall Bill is named after former Congressman Morris K. Udall, who was forced to retire because of Parkinson's complications; and Whereas: Parkinson's Disease is a chronic neurological disorder caused by a lack of the chemical Dopamine in the brain, resulting in a progressive neurological disorder which gradually renders its victims incapable of caring for themselves; and Whereas: Parkinson's Disease afflicts as many as 1.5 million Americans, approximately 40% of whom are under the age of 60. Now, Therefore, We, William A. Johnson Jr., Mayor of the City of Rochester, and John D. Doyle, Monroe County Executive, do hereby proclaim April, 1997 and April 11, 1997 to be PARKINSON'S DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH and WORLD PARKINSON'S DAY in Rochester and Monroe County and urge support of all citizens, in conjunction with the efforts of the states of Maine, Maryland and Virginia and the countries of Canada, Denmark, and Holland. Signed by William A. Johnson Jr. John D. Doyle Mayor Monroe County Executive
