Gail V...

I suffered my first bout of "frozen shoulder" after a terribly painful flare
up of bursitis in my left (primary) shoulder about 2 years ago. After a
cortisone injection into the joint, plus three months of physiotherapy I ended
up with full range of motion once again.

Unfortunately, I seem to aggravate this condition regularly by using the
mouse, which I tend to use much more than DragonDictate (voice-to-text
program) 'cause I don't want to lose my typing skills (such as they are).
Thus, I've suffered with reoccurring bursitis about every 3 or 4 months since
the original attack.

The last major flare was about 2 weeks ago, and my orthopedist has now
strongly urged me to have surgery to repair the torn rotator cuff in the
shoulder and to clean up the joint itself. I'm NOT really ready to jump up
and run to have that surgery so am looking into acupuncture first.

About 50 percent of all Parkies DO live with this problem, I'm told... much,
much more than the general populous. (DARN!)

Has anyone else had a diagnosis of "frozen shoulder"?

My sister was diagnosed as having a frozen shoulder this Jan. 1996 and
received Physical Therapy for her pain and limited movement. After 6
months of PT she was not much better, in fact she seemed to have more
difficulty with her arm and hand. She was diagnosed as probable PWP in
Aug.97 but was told that the"frozen shoulder" was a separate problem.
Of course when a major joint like a shoulder is involved, other parts
of connecting anatomy become involved ie: her right arm has become
progressively weak, she protects that arm and limits it's movement,
she has some difficulty holding a pen and writing, and she has pain in
her neck.

An orthopedic surgeon has examined her and xrays were normal. Her
neurogist did an MRI of her cervical spine and it was normal. She had
EMG muscle test wich showed minor problems but nothing to explain the
amount of symptoms she experiences.

My question is ...is this familiar to anyone? ...Is a frozen shoulder
a symptom of Parkinsons? Does anyone know any sucessful treatments for
frozen shoulder?

Thanks for any advice offered, Gail Vass (who uses Wanda Banks'
computer) to help her sister with Parkinsons
