Hi all-- In today's Pgh Post Gazette
DEPRESSION LINKED TO BRAIN AREA CONTROLLING EMOTIONS
The area of the brain that controls emotion may be abnormally small in =
people who suffer depression or other mood disorders.
Whether this shortage of gray matter is the cause or the effect of depre=
ssion is unknown, said Dr. Wayne Drevets of the University of Pgh Medical=
 Ct.
The area, called the subgenual prefrontal cortex, controls the flow of =
brain chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine that keep emotions in chec=
k. In depressed patients it is not only undersized but underactive, Drev=
ets said.
