Hello Norma Messer, thanks for the input. In answer to your question, I worked for a company for 25 years, then got downsized. The only work I have been able to find since has been through temporary agencies. My first assignment was for 10 years, then I was again downsized. Since then I have only been able to get short term assignments of 2 to 3 months, have had 3 short term assignments. I have not had any benefits for the past 11 years, as temps do not get benefits. It seems like the only people being hired these days are temps, so I just go with the flow. Sure, you don't get any benefits, but you also don't have any premiums to pay for these non-existing benefits. This is the reason I remain a 'closet PD person', as I am looking for work, not that I need the money, but because I want to stay married. I find that if we save our money during the good times, we actually get the choice on if we want to work or not during the bad times. I also find, it is not how much money you have, but how much you spend that counts. Here in Canada, we have an almost Socialist health system, everyone is covered, working or not. Sure, I have no disability insurance coverage, but from my experience of working at investigating insurance claimants for 25 years, you have to be hit by a camel while crossing the road in order to collect, so disability insurance is not worth all that much anyway. Our children are going to inherit more wealth then any previous generation, so what more could they want? Getting back to finding suitable employment, I find that the more computer knowledge and ability you have, the better chance you have of finding work. This is, however, a liability to PD people, as their typing speed diminishes. Even a voice recognition computer system would not help, as we lose our speaking ability too. Probably the best work to go into would be to become a temporary agency, and let others make money for you. Temporary agencies get 50 cents for every dollar their temps make. All you do is to find work for temps, and this type of work is really increasing in demand. Anyway, hope this has helped you in some small way, if you want anything else, please let me know. Take off, eh? Billy Baird ([log in to unmask])
