While I feel somewhat sorry for Doug and Roger whose virtual papers did
not receive justice on the MOO at Inkshed, I fear I am about to make you
feel worse. The really valuable discussion happened around the
terminals at Inkshed, between the Inkshedders huddled collegially around
too few on-line connections, rather than into the actual (virtual) MOO
space.
I think that the most important point to emerge was the idea that the
listserv is not being well-used. While it has served the needs of
people seeking specific information, it has not been a place of lively
discussion about issues important to CASLLers.
So, as the naive one in the crowd, I volunteered to get things rolling
by initiating a listserv bookgroup. If naivete prevails, it will work
something like this. Someone will propose a title, and give a reading
schedule, and then invite people to log onto the listserv to
pontificate, reflect, reject, refute, or otherwise babble about the
reading selection.
The first selection we agreed on is Alberto Manguel's _The History of
Reading_. We should try to have the book read by May 24th (take it with
you on your long weekend perambulations), at which point, let the
discussion begin. I hope those of us fired up by the recent Inkshed on
reading, and those of you who missed it and would like to get fired
up--or employed down?-- will join in the fray.
