Debbie White... Debbie... before my 10/24/94 unilateral pallidotomy I was almost as stiff as Muhammad Ali appears to be (and THAT'S S T I F F !). I always end up with a bad backache after sitting here at the computer for hours on end. After prying myself away from the 'puter (grin) in the wee small hours, I go upstairs and sit against a coupla pillows with my back resting on a heating pad while reading in bed for 'bout 45 minutes. By the time I turn off the bedside light and go to sleep (well, let's make that "TRY" to sleep) <smile>, the backache is almost always gone. When I had been so PD-stiff, the heat worked for backache relief (still does), but the stiffness was unaffected by the comfortable warmth of the heating pad. My feeling (and this is only based on my own experience) about heat and "Parkie stiffness" is that while perhaps a good massage might bring some temporary lessening of it, heat alone isn't going to do the job at all. By the way... since my pallidotomy, I have no stiffness whatsoever... at any time (YEA!!!!). I do not have PD, but when I get up in the morning, I experience stiffness. I realize this is not the same as PD stiffness. What I have to do every morning is apply a moist heat pack to my back for 20 minutes (turning on the stove is the first thing I do in the morning). This helps me enormously.I'm wondering if anyone has tried moist heat for Parkinson's-type stiffness and whether it helps at all. Debbie White [log in to unmask]
