DEAR READER, 5/14/97 @ 10:15 am
A second Sending revised a bit

There are two POLITICS/MONEY issues near and dear to my heart.
First there is the UDALL bill and then there is the Massachusetts Money
Management Program which is currently before the Massachusetts Senate.
The latter is my focus for the moment. I'm asking you to write/fax/e-mail
MY Massachusetts state legislator in support of the program. Included below
are some bit and pieces about the MMMP which I hope will give you enough
of an overview to encourage your support. I've included the Fax and E-Mail
numbers for my State Senator and in case you are inclined to "go to the top"
or send copies to key people I've also included the vitals on the President
of the Ma.Senate and the Chairperson of the Senate's Ways and Means
Committee.
RICHARD HYLAN is the Statewide Coordinator of MMMP. I consider him a
friend and colleague and I'm certain that the program is well run,
clearly needed, and deserving of your consideration.
You may wonder why I'm asking for support from such a broad based
organization as ours. There are 22 states [Only 8 of which have statewide
programs] that have similar programs meaning that there are 27 that do not
and 42 without statewide programs!! Such essential services should
be available to our frail and elderly family, friends and "neighbors"
even though they may be thousands of miles away.Do you Know about your state?
I will try and dig up data on individual states so if you are interested
please let me know.

Thank you for your ear and for considering to lend a hand..Oh, one other
thing, would you copy me so that I will have some numbers and be able to
thank you properly.
    George

Senator ___________
State House, Room _______
Boston, MA 02133

Dear Senator ___________________,

During House debate on the 1998 budget, an amendment sponsored by
Representative Douglas Petersen to add $80,000 for the statewide Massachusetts
Money Management Program [MMMP] was approved. The language was added to
line item
9110-1900, local services for the elderly. These funds will be added to the
private funding that helps run this program, and will allow the project to
move into unserved areas.
The MMMP has been in operation since 1991 and has helped almost 2000 low
income elders keep their basic household finances in order. Our clients are
unable to keep track of their budget themselves. Screened, trained , insured
volunteers help elders write checks, set up a budget and balance their
checkbook. The presence of these volunteers can help reduce the fast growing
epidemic of financial abuse of the elderly. The program is a team effort of
AARP, the Executive Office of Elder Affairs, and Mass Home Care. I urge you to
recommend to your fellow Senators that they add this Massachusetts Money
Management
Program funding to the Senate Ways and Means budget.
