Yes, it is, and yes it does.  It stimulates olfaction which can improve
appetite, and it helps the immune system.  Be careful, though.  At up to
twice the U. S. Recommended Daily Allowance it has been shown to be an immune
system stimulator.  Above that amount it tends to depress the immune system.
 If you have jumped onto the bandwagon about zinc + vitamin C lozenges to
decrease common cold symptoms, be aware that the amount of zinc in repeated
doses may exceed what is actually effective, especially if taken for an
extended period of time.

I take more than the RDA of certain nutrients for specific desired effects,
but only the RDA of others because, contrary to what we in the United States
are brainwashed to believe, more is NOT always better.
