To All.... Been reading the "Loss of smell" thread forever, it seems, and finally decided to add my 2 cents. I have very little sense of smell remaining.... I've never, ever smoked.. not even a test ciggy out behind the proverbial barn, so that isn't the culprit in my case. And whatever sense of smell I have left is very selective. I MENTALLY smell the heady scent of the "Beautiful," perfume, by Estee Lauder, that I splash on each day. I know it smells delightful, because everyone tells me it does, and it says so on the bottle. <grin> But olfactory-wise, I can't tell "Beautiful" from borscht! <sigh> On the other hand, I just noticed the gardenias are starting to bloom, accompanied by the star jasmine, right outside my office window on the my patio. And THEM I can smell.... heavenly. I can also smell chocolate, and pizza... SOOOO.. I ask you... does a body NEED to smell more? <smile> Regarding the projected surgery to repair the torn rotator cuff in my primary-left shoulder, THAT has been put off for several months by the orthopedist whom I saw today. He says that this is a tough surgery for those with PD almost ALWAYS resulting in a whopping case of "frozen shoulder," and requiring TONS of physio-therapy, with less than an 80% chance of even decent results. He's now got me on 800 mgs of ibuprofen (Motrin) twice a day and wants to see if there's any relief with that. And there ya have it with the shoulder. The collagen injections into my vocal cords are in two days (shuddering) and YES, Ken Becker... I'm thinking "TALKING THUMB!" <LOL> Barb Mallut [log in to unmask] -----Original Message----- From: Parkinson's Information Exchange On Behalf Of [log in to unmask] Sent: Wednesday, May 14, 1997 4:48 AM To: Multiple recipients of list PARKINSN Subject: Loss of Smell Add my name to the list of Parkies who have loss there "sniffer". I too thought my long years of smoking was the culprit, however I gave up the weed in 1981 and PD didn't surface until 1990. I really can't remember when I lost it, but I can say it was pre-PD. So goes the "sniffer" and so goes the "taster". I hate to think as what goes next! Oh what the hay, I'm still alive, I think...... Jim Ryan 57/7
