(22 May 97) PWP generally take a lot of prescription drugs, both in quantity and in variety. While price of any particular drug is secondary to its usefulness, it may be interesting to compare prices of several that are commonly used by PWP. Of course the price varies widely with the source. Some HMO members pay nothing at all, or a standard token amount; some find big savings in buying by mail, possibly from outside the US; while others with insurance coverage may pay the full retail price. So just for a standard basis of comparison, I asked a local (Los Angeles) drugstore for their current prices. The quotes below are per tablet, in the strength and number indicated. There may be generics other than those shown, which this particular store didn't carry: Retail (Drugstore) Price Of Some Common Parkinson's Drugs BRAND NAME GENERIC HOW SUPPLIED (brand) (generic) Akineton Biperiden 2mg (100) $0.50 $ -- Artane Trihexyphenidyl 2mg (100) $0.28 $0.16 Clozaril Clozapine 25mg (100) $0.71 $ -- Cogentin Benztropine 0.5mg (100) $0.31 $0.18 Diamox Acetazolamide 125mg (100) $0.44 $ -- Eldepryl Selegiline 5mg (60) $2.98 $ -- Inderal Propranolol 10mg (60) $0.53 $0.18 Kemadrin Procyclidine 5mg (100) $0.60 $ -- Mysoline Primidone 50mg (100) $0.27 $ -- Parlodel Bromocryptine 2.5mg (100) $2.29 $ -- Paxil Paroxetine 20mg (30) $2.47 $ -- Permax Pergolide 0.05mg (30) $1.03 $ -- Sinemet Carbidopa/Levodopa 25/100mg (100) $0.89 $0.46 Symmetrel Amantadine 100mg (100) $1.22 $ -- Cheers, Joe J.
