Friday Action Update
June 6, 1997

Advocates Prepare for June Lobbying Session

Next week, a group of grassroots lobbyists will descend on Capitol Hill
to rally additional support for the Udall bill and keep the momentum
moving towards passage. This band of dedicated activists will be a mix
of new faces and seasoned veterans, and their focus will be to try to
boost the bill's cosponsor numbers to a majority (218) in the House, and
a 60-Senator "critical mass" for action in the Senate.

Everyone in the Parkinson's community can help these lobbyists be as
effective as possible by calling, faxing and emailing your still
undecided legislators. A person with Parkinson's in you Senator's or
Representative's office can have the impact of many more if the
legislator and staff have just heard from concerned constituents.

Who are the top priorities? Of course, the members of the House
Commerce and Senate Labor Committees - especially Republicans - remain
the top priorities. Also, there are other priority targets for next
week based on the home states and regions of the advocates converging on
Washington. You can help by contacting these Members and urging them to
immediately support the Udall bill. In particular, you should focus on
Senators and Representatives from Arkansas, Texas and Wyoming, as well
as Representatives from California, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Florida.

Passing the Udall bill this year is possible! Our sponsors are
energized, there is better and growing community cooperation, and our
grassroots advocates are both more numerous and more experienced than
during the 104th Congress. Getting the bill passed will require
maximizing all these positive factors and working with a sense of
urgency. Please do what you can to help!

Due to unfortunate (and extremely frustrating) technical difficulties,
this Friday Action Update has been delayed. Please distribute as widely
as possible, and do all you can to support the activist on the Hill this
week. This week's Friday Action Update will not be delayed.
