and
 quickest for me was crushing a bit of Steptic Pencil (the stuff for shaving
 cuts) and putting a small piece directly on the sore. While intially
 painful (it will take your mind off anything else!), the sore will be gone
 in a few days.

I second Peaceful John's suggestion of the steptic (stiptic?) pencil. It
works, and it is a "rush." When we were kids we'd lick one of them just for
the overwhelming overstimulation.

I read another post mentioning acidophilus. It can be taken from the capsule
and placed directly on a canker (which comes from Latin for "crab" and means,
creepily enough, "creeping ulcer"). One medical book I have suggests, "In
adults, correct gastric disturbance or other cause." Other causes may be
pathogenic organisms, including bacteria and viruses; mechanical trauma;
irritants such as alcohol, tobacco, hot foods, spices; sensitization to
chemical substances in tooth pastes or mouthwashes; nutritional deficiencies,
esp. avitaminoses; blood disorders; poisoning  by drugs, esp heavy metals;
certain skin disorders; systemic infections such as measles, scarlet fever,
syphilis.

Thrush (meaning, even more creepily, "rotten wood") is an infection of the
mouth caused by Candida albicans and can include canker-like mouth lesions.
 There are books out that deal with candidiasis (which is prevalent in males
as well as females), but few of them mention oral doses of grapefruit seed
extract, which is the one most effective remedy I know. Note that it is
grapefruit seed, not grape or grape seed. Information on it can be found at
