Were you refering perhaps to Rube Goldberg ?
Reuben Lucius Goldberg was a cartoonist in the 1930s.  His character,
Professer Lucifer Gorgonzola Butts invented complicated contraptions to
perform simple tasks . . . which Goldberg depicted in detailed drawings
with narrative.  His drawings were syndicated in newspapers all over the
U.S.
