By implanting an electrode into the thalamus and providing very high frequency electric stimulation, Medtronic investigators discovered that the tremor causing signals can be desynchronized or blocked. The aim of this procedure is to reduce patients' tremor and enable them to resume their normal activities, hobbies and social interactions. Approved in Europe last year, this procedure is currently undergoing pre Food and Drug Administration approval testing at various locations in the U.S.
