Like, I find that the best way to hook up to the Internet is with
a Commodore 64 and Freenet.  You can pick up a Commodore 64
system for next to nothing, and the Freenet connection is either
free or at a nominal cost.  You don't get any graphics, but you
do get all the text.  You can connect with groups like this, send
and receive e-mail, and any text based procedure can be done.
