Rob, I think you have just offered an excellent description of what a
good teacher can do in a lecture format, which I take to mean teacher
up front talking/thinking outloud/demonstrating & students actively
listening and responding, whether invited or not.

Am still curious about the role of tutorials that you mentioned were
being cut back and that go with the large lecture.  How are those
organized?
