>>> What are the parameters for the different stages? <<<
Liz:

Neurologists try to measure the severity of PD symptoms by
assigning a number value (from 0 - 4 ) for each symptom as
it relates to its interference with common daily activities.
Some scales only evaluate tremor, slowness of movement
and rigidity of movement. More sophisticated scales add
evaluations of posture, gait, facial features and speech.
These will include rating the patient's ability to perform daily
activities like dressing, cooking, eating and driving.

The most common clinical rating method is the Hoehn and
Yahr scale. This method divides the progression of
symptoms into five stages.
MILD - Stage 0 = no visible symptoms
Stage 1 = symptoms on one side only
Stage 2 = symptoms on both sides, balance okay
MOD - Stage 3 = impaired balance/walking
ADV - Stage 4 = severe impairment of balance/walking
                Stage 5 = complete immobility

However, these ratings are half objective and half subjective,
based upon the patient's and CG's information to the doctor.
Plus, no one tries to measure the fortitude, attitude,
determination or state of mind of the patient. The disability of
PD can be mitigated by a positive attitude or hampered by
depression.
