IMMEDIATE ACTION!

FRIDAY, July 18, 1997

Just met with the legislative staff of Senator McCain and Wellstone. The
meeting was most productive. Attending and participating in a very
complimentary fashion were Bill Turenne, Paul Smedberg, Ed Long, Mike
Claeys and myself.

Senator McCain would like Senator Frist of Tennessee, Chairman of the
Senate subcommittee having jurisdiction over NIH, to hold hearings
immediately on the Udall Bill. This would pave the way for the Senate
Commerce committee to report the Udall Bill to the Senate floor for a
vote, where it will pass!

It would be very helpful if as many persons from Tennessee would write,
call, and visit Senator Frist and his staff urging that he hold such a
hearing ASAP. Remind them that the Udall bill was introduced in
April...and hearings should be held NOW. Our efforts with Senator Frist
with strengthen Senator McCain's hand considerably. It is also important
for ALL persons interested in the Udall bill make their desires for these
hearing known to Senator Frist. Work should begin this weekend....if not
sooner.

GOOD LUCK!!
