Parkinson's Gene Found

(Reuters) - For the first time, researcher have discovered a gene
that causes Parkinson's disease, the neurological disorder that
causes tremors, muscle rigidity, and
difficulty walking.  While the genetic mutation may explain only
a handful of cases of Parkinson's disease, it may shed
light on the causes of the disease in the general population - an
ongoing mystery.

Mortality Rates And Diabetes

(Reuters) - Diabetics have a higher risk of dying from heart
disease or stroke than non-diabetics, but a slightly lower risk
of dying from cancer.  These findings come from a
National Institutes of Health trial of more than 14,300 people,
aged 25 to 74 years, who were first evaluated as part of the
1971-1975 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1.

Scientists have found a gene responsible for Parkinson's Disease in
some families, establishing that at least one form of the degenerative
nerve illness can be inherited. The finding, announced Thursday by the
National Institutes of Health and reported in Friday's edition of the
journal Science, gives researchers a new understanding of Parkinson's
Disease and could lead to new methods of slowing or stabilizing the
illness. Patients with Parkinson's suffer from tremors, limited
