Dear Joan,
I'm sorry that I don't know anything about the two places you mentioned. It
sounds as if possibly the Neurological Institute may be of more help (since
PD is neurological). However, one thing that should be asked about, no matter
where she goes--a brace for that foot! The device some of my students wear is
called an AFO (I think it stands for Ankle Foot Orthotic). There are some
that have a stationary ankle, and others that have a hinged ankle, which
allows for more mobility. Either way, they provide support for the person
while they're walking or standing, and they also keep the foot and leg from
becoming contracted (pulled out of shape). I'm sure that someone at either of
the places you mentioned can tell your parents how to get one made. They are
made especially to fit the person who wears them, and are made of a
lightweight plastic, with some padding and Velcro straps, so it's not too
hard to put them on, once the foot is properly positioned. Email me if you
need more info. Trish
