Katheryn and Delda,

The medications mentioned are certainly not harmless. Mellaril and
trilafon are both neuroleptics which block dopamine transmission. They
are extremely valuable in treating psychotic disorders such as
schizophrenia. The cause significant problems for PWP and usually
should not be used by us. There is no evidence to my knowledge that
they cause PD however. They can cause a parkinson's like syndrome which
is present only when the individual is taking the drug. They also can
cause Tardive Dyskinesia which at times is not reversible. It also
stands to reason that drug induced parkinsonism would b more likely to
occur in people who are in the process of developing PD since it blocks
dopamine. I would speculate that the people you each know who took
these drugs in the past were more susceptible to the drug side-effects
because their PD was in the process of developing rather than the PD was
caused by the medications.

Elavil also known as amitriptyline, is a tricyclic antidepressant and
should not cause effects related to dopamine blockade.
