Once upon a time, clothiers sold clothing and fund-raisers asked for
handouts and held charity balls. But since the =9280s, charities have
joined up with cosmetics, jewelry and clothing businesses to promote
buying for a cause. Such efforts softened the image of corporate America
and raised millions for the likes of breast cancer, AIDS, drunken
driving and environmental destruction.
As for the latest entry, look for Muhammad Ali=92s silk ties and cotton
boxer shorts. A portion of sales proceeds are targeted for research and
education on Parkinson=92s disease, from which he suffers.
The boxer has licensed the Carpediem Co. of Salt Lake City to produce
the styles. The prints are all busy, colorful attention-grabbers. Some
are decorated with whimsical patterns created from actual disease
organisms. Some are reminiscent of the solid banded trunks Ali fought
in. And the graphic design on the waist band proclaims =93Ali: The
Greatest of All Time.=94
He is scheduled to appear on Jay Leno=92s show Aug. 27 to promote the
project.
The ties are priced at $30 to $35. The shorts cost $20. They are
available in selected department stores, or by calling 1-800-246-5121.
