Current work (1,2) suggests the complex but unsurprising relationship between various diseases of the central nervous system, and that research on any one such disease is likely to help in others as well. The chorea of Huntington's Disease and the dyskinesia of Parkinson's Disease arise from the same source, hyperactivity of the nigrostriatal dopamine pathway, but for entirely different reasons. Smoking, by stimulating nicotine receptors, probably delays the onset or progress of Alzheimer's Disease, and smoking also appears to correlate with protection against Parkinson's Disease, but again by an entirely different mechanism. 1.
