Current work (1,2) suggests the complex but unsurprising
relationship between various diseases of the central nervous
system, and that research on any one such disease is likely to
help in others as well.
The chorea of Huntington's Disease and the dyskinesia of
Parkinson's Disease arise from the same source, hyperactivity of
the nigrostriatal dopamine pathway, but for entirely different
reasons.
Smoking, by stimulating nicotine receptors, probably delays the
onset or progress of Alzheimer's Disease, and smoking also appears
to correlate with protection against Parkinson's Disease, but
again by an entirely different mechanism.
