Ida, you probably know about the US's social programs, such as Social Security, Medicare,. Medicade, etc., they are better than nothing, and in some cases MUCH better than nothing, but would not come close to matching the income from a highly professional job in the medical field, for example. So, private disability insurance is a good idea. Most of our social programs are based on income when working, so if you never had much before the disability, you won't get much, in comparison. As far as wanting to give up one's job, usually the choice is not easy. Each person has to make his/her own decision. Ken B
