Rosemary,

Please forward this to Bonnie if you can since I did not see the original
message.
==================================

Bonnie,

On my home page (http://umbc.edu/~warr) I have an article about the
Volunteers for Medical Engineering's Future Home. I is a house
specifically designed for the elderly and handicapped. the current
resident is a quadraplegic. The house not only has the standard amenities
for someone confined to a wheel chair, but is also completely controled by
a compouter using off the shelf hardware and software. (It was there that
I first saw Dragon Dictate.)

The computer will, among other things, open/close/lock all external door
and windows, remind the occupant of things to do (such as take medicine),
answer the phone, place a call, and run the Guardian, a program that will
dial an emergency number if no activity is detected after a couple of
hours during a time the occupant is supossed to be awake. Also, if you
leave the house and are not back within two hours of your expected return
time an emergency call is also made.
