Heather, first, I have to say your dad is a lucky guy to have a daughter as
caring and intelligent as you to look out for his interests. i don't have PD,
my father does and is 80 years old, and has had PD for several years.  From
what I have seen on this list from patients and doctors, etc, is that the
surgery, such as Pallidotomy will not be reccomended at the age of 48, if
there are other treatments that can control the disease, for now. There are
so many new medications, and the surgery keeps improving, so that it MAY be a
good option before too long.  The final word should come from the
neurologist, or movement disorder specialist, when the time is right for
surgery. I am 54, if it were my decision, I would try to wait for a better
option to come along, before jumping into anything that is not reversible.
