Hi "neighbor" !

We live in Overland Park, KS, and watch out for my mother (76/6ish -- yes, you did that right!) who's in a nursing home in Lenexa. I'm sure you will find info and friends on these 2 lists; I can't imagine how I would have managed without them.

I'm concerned about the "given up on life" comment you made. You don't mention whether your mother is being treated for depression? Depression is a very common companion to PD, esp in the elderly, and unlikely to improve without meds (sometimes it's as hard to get the right "fit" with antidepressants as it is with PD meds, unfortunately, but it's almost always do-able.) My mother has needed anti-depressants AND anti-anxiety meds as well -- and they sure helped.

Another question is what kind of doctor is treating your mother's pd? Most listees feel that a neurologist who specialized in PD (sometimes called a "movement disorder specialist") is vital; the disease is just so complicated that it's hard for docs with just a few PWP in their practices to know about PD in depth. The KU Med Ctr in KCK has a fabulous-world-famous-we're-happy-with-them Parkinson's clinic; if there's nothing comparable closer to Sedalia you might want to have KU do, say, an annual consult for your Mom.

Again - welcome - glad you found us!
