I inquired of Betty Noel about MSG, as she has given us information on aspartame before. She replied to the list, got bounce because she is not a member, and then asked me to forward her comments, which are as follows: << Return-Path: <[log in to unmask]> Date: Mon, 10 Nov 1997 11:40:56 -0500 (EST) From: Betty Martini <[log in to unmask]> To: Arthur Hirsch <[log in to unmask]> cc: Parkinson's Information Exchange <[log in to unmask]>, [log in to unmask], Madelon Price <[log in to unmask]>, "h.j. roberts" <[log in to unmask]>, Jack and Adrienne Samuels <[log in to unmask]> Subject: Re: MSG Question Dear Arthur: In order to help you, I am copying this message to the experts in this field. Jack Samuels is the expert on MSG and is the man who filed suit against the FDA to have it labeled. There are many names for MSG and people don't realize they are ingesting it. In the case of Jack Samuels, if he ingested it he could go into anaphylactic shock. He has sent out material for years, written articles and exposed all the problems. He is the man to talk to. Also, Dr. John Olney, is a world famous researcher who made world news last year over the fact that the population is coming down with the same brain tumor as the rats who were fed aspartame. I have a reprint of Dr. Olney paper in l970 titled Brain Damage In Infant Mice Following Oral Intake of Glutamate, Aspartate or Cysteine. Dr. Madlon Price who works with Dr. Olney is on our Mission Possible list and she can give you some information as well. Dr. H. J. Roberts is the world expert on aspartame and has written many books, hundreds of publications and has tapes on this deadly neurotoxin, marketed as NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and no telling what else since the patent expired. His books can be gotten at 1 800 -814-9800. In his book Aspartame (NutraSweet) Is It Safe? (Charles Press, Philadelphia), he discusses how aspartame changes the dopamine level of the brain. It also can trigger Parkinson's. Anybody with this disease needs to get off of aspartame right away. This is how I found out about aspartame in the first place. As it happened, Dr. Ron Austin, a friend from California visited me and gave me an article on aspartame and mentioned that it was a poison and broke down into formaldehyde. A few weeks later I noticed a dear friend who had JUST BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH PARKINSONS appeared to be dying. With a medical background I knew you don't get Parkinson's one day and die the next. He couldn't form the words to talk and he was like a toy soldier out of control, his arms and legs kicking out. He is a great speaker but at a convention it took two men to help him to the podium, and he coudln't even remember the words of prayer and had to read it. When I saw Dick I asked him if he was on NutraSweet and he said he was. I told him to get off of it and asked to be referred to an expert on aspartame. Thats when I met Dr. Roberts who told me to get him off aspartame right away because it changes the brain chemistry. I was shocked that something as deadly as aspartame would be on the market in the first place, and secondly, had no warning for patients with Parkinson Disease. But Dick got off aspartame and a week later all the kicking motions disappeared and he could speak again. I know that if I had not warned him off he would be dead today. As I read Dr. Roberts books and learned more about aspartame it was obvious that 5 out of 7 people today on aspartame already have some of the symptoms or a disease triggered by this neurotoxin. Everywhere I went I was noticing the symptoms or diseases and spent much of my time getting people of aspartame and watching their symptoms disappear. Fianlly I started a worldwide volunteer force, now in many countries of the world, called Mission Possible. All we do is warn people off this deadly poison. And of late, since they given blanket approval to aspartame, people are getting sick quicker and we have several cases that have died of late. You will see below my signature, the DORway web page, and on it are the 92 symptoms from the FDA report that I got under Freedom of Information. In a nutshell, aspartame destroys the brain, the optic nerve and the central nervous system. It ravages every organ of the body. It also triggers an irregular heart rhythm and doctors not realizing that aspartame is a drug and not an additive, medicate these patients and the drugs interact causing heart block or sudden deaths from myocardial infarctions. Victims have been taken to Emergency Rooms with racing heart, palpitations, tachycardia, etc. The ADI or Allowable DAily Intake was actually set for rats as brought out in Dr. Roberts books, and not humans. You cannot set an ADI for poison for humans. And thats what aspartame is. It has no redeeming effects. It is not even a diet product, the congresional record which list the 30 pages of the protest by the National Soft Drink Association, state that aspartame makes you crave carbohydrates so you gain weight. And methanol is a cumulative poison. It converts to formaldehyde and then formic acid and causes metabolic acidosis. This wood alcohol also converts in the retina of the eye and causes retinal detachments and other eye problems including blindness. Dr. Russell Blaylock, a neurosurgeon, has written a book about MSG and aspartame also, called EXCITOTOXINS; THE TASTE THAT KILLS - 1 800 -543-2665. He also goes into Parkinson's Disease as well as how it mimics MS. Dr. Roberts books and Dr. Blaylock's book is a must for anyone with Parkinson's Disease. We have demanded the recall of aspartame from the worldwide market and the FDA just ignores it. Case histories flood in daily of the sick and dying on aspartame. You could take them from the Internet 24 hours a day. This is the reason we have gotten other countries to set up their own Mission Possible operations, and we are now in Sweden, Peru, New Zealand, Australia, Greece, India, France, Mexico, Canada, Holland, Finland, etc. Every Parkinson's patient should be told that aspartame is a neurotoxin and can in fact cause their death because it changes brain chemistry. I'll turn you over to the experts and if I can help further please get back in touch. Also check out Mark Gold's web page, address below my signature, who has a large web page on aspartame and MSG. Also, you will see a web page titled NOTMILK and there is a new book by Robert Cohen that exposes the FDA and Monsanto (maker of the bovine growth hormone and NutraSweet). This is another book that should be part of the library because it is another poison to the Parkinson patient. Regards, Betty P.S. Believe the NO MSG site. They are telling you the truth. The other people are probably paid by the glutimate society to give you false information. They pay a lot of people. Jack will tell you. While these drugs may be therapeutic, or at least nontoxic to the mother, they could produce irreparable damage to the unborn child. It has been shown that drugs taken during pregnancy may act as teratogens producing structural malformations in the fetus. Many drugs can also produce more subtle biochemical and physiological teratogenic defects in the fetus. While these may be "delayed" defects that are not apparent at birth or even during childhood, they are both longterm and permanent defects. As a preponderance of drugs easily pass through the placental "barrier" as well as the mammary epithelium into the milk, the developing mammal remains susceptible to the teratogenic effects of aternally administered drugs from conception, through fetal development, parturition and during nursing. Just as maternal drug consumption can threaten the health of the unborn child, a far more insidious danger may result from the inadvertent exposure of the perinate to a "sea" of pervasive environmental chemicals. Many of the chemicals in our air, water and food supply can cause malformations, and like certain drugs, we have proposed that they may also produce more subtle biochemical defects. In support of our hypothesis, we have found that peripartum exposure to therapeutic or dietary levels of phenytoin, phenobarbital, monosodium glutamate (MSG) and monosodium aspartate (MSA) can all produce latent, but permanent defects in the hepatic monooxygenase system. In some cases the defects are "silent", and are only expressed when the system is challenged with an inducing agent. In future studies we propose to examine two fundamental questions. 1) How do the teratogens induce their defects at the time of exposure? 2) How are the latent defects expressed in adulthood? We plan to examine these questions by a) determining the susceptible forms of P450 and their mRNAs, b) identifying the defects in the induction mechanisms, c) s tudying the role of endogenous hormones in the induction and expression of the monooxygenase defects, and d) investigating the ability of hormones to reverse the abnormalities. 5.References: 6.Category: MODELS 7.Subcategory: BASIC RESEARCH 8.Keywords for Experimental System/Species: MAMMALIAN, LABORATORY STUDY, FATE AND TRANSPORT 9.Keywords for Experimental Endpoints: HORMONE RECEPTORS, REPRODUCTIVE, CYTOCHROME P450 10.Chemical Agents: 11.Performing Institution: UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA 12.Contact: NICHD Public Information Office; 301-496-5133 Return to the EDRI Federal Project Inventory search page Last modified: January 20, 1997 http://www.epa.gov/endocrine/inventory/NICH-001.html ---------------------------------------------------- Regards...
