Hi Dan Lutenegger. I think my ginger ale tip came from the a monthly
"newspaper" for Parkie people edited by Paul Mote at [log in to unmask]
Know the one I mean? Anyway...it basically involves dropping one 25/250
sinemet or three and a half 10/100 sinemet into a 12 oz bottle of ginger
ale. Apparently sinemet is not absorbed into the stomach...it has to pass
into the small intestine. To do this it has to pass through the pyloric
valve which in Parkie people can take three or more hours to open, but
which time the sinemet has lost half its efficacy. The "sinemet fizz"
solves this problem because ...being liquid...it gets past the pyloric
valve even when it's closed. The sugar helps it get asborbed thru the
intestinal wall much faster. Sugar is taken up by the brain very quickly
and tends to take the sinemet with it....according to Tony Schoonenberg of
the Movement Disorders Team at Loma Linda University Medical
Centre.....email: [log in to unmask]
It can be used either as a rescue between doses or as a standard dose every
one to two hours. My husband, Ken, has been having swigs of it just
whenever he feels the need, and he certainly seems to have been functioning
better since he started. You might like to email Tony Schoonenberg and see
what he says...I may do that myself as well. Incidentally....we have only
just started getting the list...and after receiving a flood of letters the
first few days, we opted for the supposedly shortened version. Tonight we
saw an item called "joke from Liz's friend"...but with my lack of technical
knowledge I managed to wipe the entire summary without getting to that
item. As a newcomer it's highly unlikely I was the Liz referred to...but
I'd appreciate it if you could confirm this. I hate wiping things before
I've read them! That "trash" sign is very unforgiving if you touch it
accidentally! Incidentally...my description of the ginger ale trick is
very basic, so I hope you can get the full details from Dr Schoonenberg.
Regards, Liz and Ken McKeown. (I can't get thru to your email so will send
this via the List and hope it reaches you.)
