i agree with you
that lots of animals/pets can and do display a range of emotions

i just don't think i have ever seen, or will ever see,
a tear shed by one
and i am absolutely positive that i have never, ever,
heard a guffaw or even a lololol from one

my cat credentials are as follows
for the period 1965-1997:
samantha*
pamplemousse
greybeorn
sacha
spot*
angie
spike*
dot [part-time only]
speckles
spud
stubby [of internet fame]

all cats entrusted to my care from kittenhood indicated thus *
have each enslaved me for a minimum of thirteen [13]
consecutive human years

i have observed the following emotions/reactions
in one or another of them
at one time or another
but
not in all of them
and
not all at the same time:

contentment
joy
pride
childlike wonder
awe
anger
smug conceit
jealousy
fear
terror
loathing
affection
gooshiness
yearning
excitement
anxiety
sympathy
love
teasing
playfulness
bitter resignation
reproachfulness
spitefulness
snobbishness
dopeyness
[as differentiated from]
duh-ness
goofiness
sneakiness
bewilderment
utter astonishment
ferociousness
and even
clairvoyance
