Dear Don and Vivian -

It's quite possible that the Medicare denial is just a bureaucratic mistake, so it's too soon to get upset about it.

My suggestions is to NOT pay the bill yet.  First, ask the hospital to resubmit their claim to Medicare.  Sometimes they have used the wrong code, and sometimes there is a "better" code that gets accepted more readily. Then just wait until you hear from them again.  It takes a long time for stuff to get processed.  The hospital/doctors can wait, too.

I'm going to be off-line until January 12, but I'm sure there are lots of others on the list who can try to help you in the meantime.  Also, the folks at your local Senior Center might be able to help.

So --- don't worry, be happpy!  and  enjoy the holidays with that wonderful family of yours!
