The letter from Senators McCain and Wellstone to the President requesting funding for the Udall Act in his FY1999 Budget request is going to be sent to the White House on Monday, the 22nd of December. As of the last available update, it has been co-signed by 15 Senators as follows: Senators Gordon Smith (R-OR) Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) Rick Santorum (R-PA) Alfonse D'Amato (R-NY) Richard Shelby (R-AL) Richard Bryan (D-NV) Christopher "Kit" Bond (R-MO) Frank Lautenburg (D-NJ) Robert Torricelli (D-NJ) Barbara Boxer (D-CA) Tom Daschle (D-SD) Patty Murray (D-WA) Charles Robb (D-VA) Tom Harkin (D-IA) Robert Kerrey (D-NE) Once again, it appears that our true hero on the Hill is Sonya Sotak of Senator McCain's office. At a time when most staffers (let alone members) are taking an extended vacation, Sonya has been working tirelessly on the thankless task of circulating this letter and following up with us to update her progress. She is truly an unsung hero, and all of us are indebted to her. I also would like to say thank you to all of you who took the time to urge your Senators to add their support to this effort. Were it not recess, I think that the success rate would have been considerably higher. Here's to hoping that the Holiday Season brings each and every one of you all of the Joy and Happiness you deserve. Feel free to call or reply to me if you have any further questions.
