Furthermore, there are two groups of compounds which have vitamin E activitity -- tocopherols and tocotrienols. The synthetic form has slightly lower biological activity than the natural form, so scientists wanted to find a term that could be used worldwide to measure vitamin E activity in all types of compounds. They came up with "alpha-tocopherol equivalent." One mg d-alpha tocopherol = 1 alpha-TE. And 9 mg = one IU (International Unit). Therefore 200 mg = 22.2 IU.
