Mark,

I am glad your dad is doing better. There may be a silver lining to the
depression.  He is showing insight into his his mental state  e.g. feeling he is
losing his mind.  That believe it or not is a positive prognostic sign.  He may
have had a psychotic depression or this may be a post-psychotic depression which
often occurs when an individual is recovering from a psychosis. In any case an
antidepressant may be helpful.

I would suggest talking to your dad's MD's and explaining your observations both
of now and several months ago.  Waiting may be the best strategy or adding
slowly an antidepressant such as Zoloft might be helpful.  It should be his
Doctor's call depending on the clinical situation.
