Writing in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia say a recent study of volunteers indicated that those taking the drug, sold under the brand name Ditropan, scored low on mental function tests. Study author Dr. Ira Katzy says the test findings "demonstrate that oxybutynin can cause cognitive impairment and suggest that physicians prescribing it should monitor their patients to facilitate the early recognition of those who experience drug-related cognitive deficits." The study notes that labeling of the drug carries no warning of possible memory problems, but does carry cautions concerning side effects, including hallucinations or dizziness.
