> Julian , Hi
Well dont belive everything you read . I was succesfully using
Dragon Dictate on my 486 DX 2 66 a year ago ( 12 Meg RAM 500 Meg
HD half filled ) . There was no time delay in the processing . The
time consumption was in teaching it to recognise your speach and your
response to its options . When you speak you must break it up into
words . It will print what word it thinks you said plus giving you a
menu of options of other words you can choose from the menu or go
onto the next word . As you can see the system depnds a lot on
you reaction time . I chose the smallest vocabulary option . I believe
it was 20,000 words. Obviously the bigger the vocab. the longer the
computer takes going through the vocab options for a match .
Since a vacab of 1000 will do most English words any more than a
20000 word vocab is unnecessary . You will always have to use a
spelling option for words such as proper names etc. With a 20000 word
vocab you will use this slightly more often . The speed will depend on
you changing over to this option faster rather than the miniscule
reduction in its usage by having 100000 word option . The biggeer the
program the more problems . I was using windows 3.11 .
I stopped using it because of computer problems . I think I have a
virus ( 3 different antiviral programs name 3 different viruses ! ) .
I had to scrub the HD clean . Still having minor problems . When I
can guarantee no viruses I will try again .
Of course there might have been a dramatic improvement requiring
vastly more memory since I used Dragon Dictate but I doubt it . The
basic problem is that it uses word recognition . I speak in
sentences and unil there is gramatical analysis and recognition of
what I an saying I will have to check it continually which slows
everything down .
To sum up , I was the slow link and having a bigger faster
computer does therefore not help .
     peace
