This week I received the United Parkinson Foundation newsletter. All it
contains is info about COMT inhibitors (Tolcapone and Entacapone) It said
it is likely to be released shortly in the U.S. It states that the
combination of Sinemet CR with a COMT inhibitor could conceivably be a
better solution for wearing off then either of these strategies along.
However, the effectiveness of COMT inhibitors might make such a combination
unnecessary. It also say that the most common side effects from the COMT
inhibitors are effects resulting from increased actions of levodopa. These
include enhanced involuntary movements (dyskinesias), nausea, vivid dreams
or hallucinations. Such side effects can be lessened by lowering the dosage
of levodopa. Other side effects seem specific to tolcapone. Up to ten
percent of patients taking this drug experienced diarrhea. This can be a
mild problem of brief duration and discontinuing tolcapone gives prompt
recovery from diarrhea. Some patients have been unable to continue with
tolcapone because of this side effect. It's a four page newsletter with
lots of into. They are out of Chicago. There phone number is 312 733-1893.
You might call for a copy. Nancy B cg for Don 64/14
