This joke had a better ending when I first heard it 35 year ago:
"There are three morals to this story:
"First, he who puts you into it is not necessarily your enemy;
"Second, he who takes you out of it is not nrcessarily your
friend; and
"Third, when you're in it up to your ears, don't sing
