Lanier,

It took eight months and lots of tests for me to get a diagnosis. My
symptoms were mild consisting of some minor coordination problems with
my right hand. I first went to my family doctor who gave me a general
physical and a clean bill of health. My husband had died a couple of
months before and I could tell that he thought my ailments were results
of my grief even though I told him the problems had existed prior to
my husband's illness. Eventually he sent me to a neurologist who put
me through a battery of tests but couldn't identify anything wrong.
(Fortunately I had good insurance coverage.) After eight months of
frustration, I went back to my family doctor and practically threw a
temper tantrum. In fear, he consulted with the neurologist and they
sent me to the head neurologist at the County Hospital who they said was
considered the best diagnostician in the city. He asked a series of
questions and really listened to the answers and in 10 minutes told me
what I had. Of course, he had access to my file with all the test
reports but he was the best doctor listener I have ever run into.

That's my experience--didn't get a misdiagnosis--just didn't get a
diagnosis at all.
