Dear Friends, I have written to Kathrynne for further details re: the liquid
sinemet, as my mother does not seem to be responding to the sinemet as of two
weeks... I've JUST passed along all of the comments regarding the timing of
Sinemet (30-60 minutes prior to meals...) and am curious about the possibility
that my mother may not even be absorbing the Sinemet at all due to poor
peristalsis. Kathrynne suggested that I send a copy of my note to her for
members of the caregivers/PWP groups to respond to.

If you have had any experience/success (or otherwise) with liquid Sinemet, I
would greatly appreciate that info., so that I can take it along to our next
appointment with Mom's neurologist. THANK YOU in advance for any and all
help/suggestions.

Quoting from note to Kathrynne:
THANK YOU for your counsel... your suggestions make so much sense, and I am
convinced that we need to make some changes to at least give the Sinemet a
chance... can you tell me any more about the Liquid Sinemet? (And WHY, oh why
would a neuro. not have told us of the need to take Sinemet away from
meals???) I can't help but feel that 2 weeks have been surrendered to The
Disease, you know? Well... on with today and its hopes and changes.
Kathrynne's response: (in part)
<< Sinemet 10'100 or 25/l00 l0 tablets
<< Ascorbic acid 1/2 level teaspoon
<< Water 1 liter

<< Shake until tablets disintegrate. This is a day's meds
<< They suggest a standard amount every hour.

"I would, however, query listmembers about their use of liquid Sinemet. The
subject
comes up regularly, and there's it with half Tang,
half cranberry juice -- the vitamin C/ascorbic acid keeps the Sinemet stable
throughout the day. Also, the amount of Sinemet is the amount the patient
uses,
not necessarily Sinemet 10/100, etc. The neurologist with whom I performed the
nutrition research project likes liquid Sinemet for many of his patients, as
it
does provide relief for those with delayed stomach emptying."

Carole, that's truly incredible!! The need to take Sinemet well before meals
is
very well understood, as is protein's interference with Sinemet absorption. Is
this neuro a movement disorders specialist? (Carole: YES!!) If not, I would
seek one who is --
your mother may not be getting optimal medication for her state. (Carole:
Maybe the neuro was having a bad day??? Help!)

At any rate, I would consider the Hearty Balance products. One problem I find
with
my PD clients is unplanned weight loss, which greatly enhances all aspects of
the
disease. If your mother has lost any weight, this should be stabilized. HB
supplements can provide nourishment with less interference with levodopa.
