I recently received the attached letter. Regardless of the protestations to
the contrary, it is a chain-mail letter, and therefore a SCAM, a GYP, a CON,
or whatever word you may use to describe a cruel and greedy confidence
trick. I urge everyone who has received a similar letter to dump it.

I don't know what Don Bern's connection with it is, whether he is part of
the scam or merely an innocent dupe. But the Compuserve address does not
bode well.

I checked out the [log in to unmask] address, and surprise, surprise!
The following was the result:

in other words, an accommodation address', an anonymous hidey-hole for
con-artists.

This type of scheme is ILLEGAL in Australia under the Post and Telegraphs
Act, and persons forwarding messages under the scheme risk prosecution. But
that is only the legalistic side of it. I am DISGUSTED that con-artists try
to make money illegally from people with disabilities. What *is* this, the
'U.N. International Year of the Con-artist', and no-one has told me? Or
just Open Season on people with disabilities? <sheesh!>

Yes, *some* people make money under these schemes, always the originator,
and the first few people on the short list. But only at the expense of the
gullible! They are like pyramid selling schemes, from one point on,
everyone gets burnt.

Dear Lord, save us from any more of this disgusting crap!

Subject: An opportunity for PD funding

Don Berns here. =20
You may have seen my postings on the Parkinsns Digest over the last 5
years. I had a Pallidotomy with Dr. Iacono in 1993 with spectacular
results which continue on today. Like many of you I have taken great
encouragement from the passage of the Udall bill thanks in large part to
those indefatigable workers Jim Cordy and Joan Samuelson. =20

Often I have wished I had more financial resources to give to help find =
a
cure for this insidious disease. Well perhaps I have stumbled upon a =
plan
that will enable us to raise lots of money for Parkinson's Disease =
research
as well as provide for some personal needs that Parkinson's Disease has =
a
way of wrenching away from us. =20

I would ask you to take a minute to read the following message all the =
way
through with an open mind then after considering it for 24 hours to act =
on
it. I have written to a randomly selected group from the Park. Digest
rather than posting to the group at large but certainly anyone you want =
to
include is fine with me.
-----------------------------------------

Here is a forwarded message I received from Russ Bjorgaard, 1495 =
Velkommen
Dr., Duluth MN, 55804. My immediate reaction was to delete this from my
mail box and go on about my business. For I am one who never buys a
lottery ticket, fills out the Reader's Digest Sweepstakes, or buys =
raffle
tickets. However, as I read this e-mail I was intrigued by its concept =
and
the possibility of participating in a means for obtaining resources in a
legal manner at very little risk ($6). =20

I personally plan to distribute whatever resources accrue in the =
following
manner. 25% to projects dedicated to battling Parkinson's Disease, and =
25%
to various specific Christian ministries and 50% for personal use.

Feel free to delete or throw out this message if you decide not to
participate. If you decide to participate, please write to me in three
months from now and share your results.

Hello. My father is a retired attorney, and about one year ago a man
came to him with a letter. The letter he brought him is basically the
same as the letter in front of you now. He asked him to verify the =
fact
that this letter was legal. =20

Dad told him that the letter originally brought to him was not 100% =
legal.
The client asked him to alter the letter to make it 100% legal. He
advised him to make a small change in the letter and it would be all=20
right. Dad told me how it works. I thought it was a long shot, so I=20
decided against participating. =20

About two months later he called to tell Dad that he had received over
$800,000.00 in cash!!! I didn't believe him so he asked me to try the
plan and see for myself. I thought about it for a couple of days and
decided that there was not much to lose. I followed the instructions
exactly and mailed out 200 letters. =20

Sure enough, the money started coming! It came slowly at first, but =
after
three weeks I was getting more than I could open in a day. After about
three months the money stopped coming. I kept a precise record of my
earnings and at the end it totaled $868,439.00. =20

I was earning a good living as a therapist, but as anyone in the =
healthcare
profession will tell you, there is a lot of stress that comes with the
job. I told myself if things worked out I would retire from practice =
and
play golf. =20

I decided to try the letter again, but this time I sent 500 letters =
out.=20
Well, three months later I had totaled $3,344,178.00 ! ! I just
couldn't believe it. =20

I met my Dad's old client for lunch to find out how this exactly =
works.=20
He told me that there were a few similar letters going around. What =
made=20
this one different is the fact that there are six names on the letter, =
not
five like most others. That fact alone resulted in far more returns. =
=20

The other factor was the advice that my dad gave him in making sure =
the
whole thing was perfectly legal, since no one wants to risk doing =
anything
not legal. I bet by now you are curious about what little change Dad =
told
him to make. =20

Well, if you send a letter like this out, to be legal, you must sell
something if you expect to receive a dollar. Dad told him that anyone
sending a dollar out must receive something in return. So, when you =
send
a dollar to each of the six names on the list, you must include a slip =
of
paper saying "Please put me on your mailing list" and include your =
name
and mailing address (your phone number is optional). This is the key =
to
the program! =20

We will be working together to improve each others lives! Follow the
simple instructions below exactly, and in less than three months you =
could
 receive over $800,000.00 ! ! ! =20

1. Immediately send $1.00 to each of the six people on the list below. =
Be
sure to enclose a note wrapped around the dollar saying " Please add me =
to
your mailing list" and include your name and mailing address (Your =
phone
number is optional) =20

2. Remove the name next to #1 on the list and move the rest of the names =

up one position. Then, place your name and address in the #6 spot. You =

can also save this to a text file, edit it yourself and save the new =
edited
 copy. =20

3. When you have completed the above instructions you have an option of =

mailing your letter out in one of two ways: Through the U.S. Postal
service or e-mail. This letter has been proven perfectly legal for =
both
ways as long as you follow the above instructions. To mail this out =
over
the internet, you can browse through areas and find people to send =
this
message. Or you can get a Mass Mailing Network to mail it out in large
volumes for you. Either way will bring big payoffs. =20

4. Keep a copy of this letter so that you can use it the next time. =
Mail
it out again in six months. But mail it to the addresses you received
with each dollar, it will work again, only much better. This is a =
service
and is 100% legal ! refer to: the U.S. Postal & Lottery Laws, Title =
18,
Sections 1302 and 1341 or Title 18, Section 3005 in the U. S. Code, =
also
Code of Federal Regs. vol 16, Sections 255 and 436, which state that "a
product or service must be exchanged for money received." Assume for
example that you get 7.5% to pass on this message rate which is very
conservative.  =20

My first attempt was about 9.5% and my second time was over 11%. =20
1) When you mail out 200 letters, 15 will send you $1.00. =20
2) Those 15 mail out 200 letters and 225 will send you $1.00.
3) Those 225 mail out 200 letters and 3,375 will send you $1.00.
4) Those 3,375 mail out 200 letters and 50, 625 will send you $1.00 =20
5) Those 50,625 mail out 200 letters and 759,375 will send you $1.00 At
this point you name drops off the list, but so far you have received =
$813,
615 ! ! ! ! =20

It works every time, but how well depends on how many letters you send =
out.
In the example shown above, you mail out 200 letters..... If you had
mailed out 500 letters, you would have received $2,006,917 ! ! Check =
the
math yourself, I want you to, but I guarantee that it is correct! With
this kind of return, you've got to try it. Try it once and you'll do it
again. **Just make sure that you send a dollar to each of the six names =
on
the list with a note to be added to their mailing list. Together we =
will
all prosper.** =20

Another approach is to write letters to 25-30 people you know and feel
fairly certain will decide to become involved.
                Wishing you well,
                Don Berns
Here is the list of names. Send $1 to everyone on the list. =20
Add your name to the bottom of the list and move everyone else up one =
spot
when you send out your=20
e-mail/letter. Include a note saying *Please add me to your mailing =
list.*
