One of my favorite Shakespeare spinoffs is a pre-quel to _King Lear_:
_Seven Lears_ by Howard Barker. It's a fascinating play which follows
Lear from his boyhood up to about the time _King Lear_ is supposed to
begin. Barker worked from the question of why the mother of Lear's
daughters is apparently erased from the family's memory in Shakespeare's
text. It's a bit experimental in style. I have both acted in it and
taught it in conjunction with _King Lear_.
