Friends,

Be prepared to tune in and be part of two events that will result in MEGA
media coverage.
Better yet, those who live close to DC, should make an effort to attend the
events and use the attention PD will be getting to lobby the targeted
legislators.

Event # 1
The Assoc.American Universities reported today that a "Press
Conference/Rally for NIH Doubling" has been scheduled for next Thursday,
March 19, on Capitol Hill. The event will be held at noon in Room 562 of
the Dirksen Senate Office Building. The event is being sponsored by NIH
Squared, the advocacy group formed by Morton Kondracke, in conjunction with
the Campaign for Medical Research initiated by John Whitehead, the National
Health Council, and the Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research Funding.

Participants will include senators Connie Mack (R-FL), Tom Harkin (D-IA),
Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and other members of the House and Senate.
Christopher Reeve, Mary Tyler Moore and possibly Sam Donaldson will also
attend to deliver personal messages about the value of medical research.
Sponsors expect the event to draw national media attention. AAU will
participate by providing a press release supporting the doubling of NIH
funding, to be distributed at the event along with those of several hundred
other organizations supporting the effort.

Event #2
On March 26, Muhammad Ali will be testifying before the House Commerce
Subcommittee of Health & Environment chaired by Congressman Billirakis
(R-FL). This event will be announced shortly in more detail by Larry
Hoffheimer, NPF.
