I will just add my 2-cents worth.

My husband and I went through this process with both of our fathers several
years ago. Therefore, I am not up on the latest requirements. My father
lived in Iowa and my father-in-law in Missouri, so the laws were different
in the two states.

If I remember right, the maximum money that the person could have in assets
was $1,999 in Iowa and $999 in Missouri at that time. Their home and car
were exempt if I remember correctly.

The one thing that is VERY IMPORTANT is to get an irrevocable prepaid
funeral plan before applying for Medicaid. The crucial thing about this is
to ensure that it is an irrevocable plan for it to be exempt. Otherwise,
you cannot save enough to cover funeral expenses. You can contact your
local funeral home for more information. My parents had taken care of this
prior to dad's illness. My husband and I took care of this for my father-
in-law through the local funeral home.
