There are a great many benefits available under both medicare and medicaid. However, they are not "given" out, but you must know what they are AND ASK for them. Most communities have a senior center and/or local ombudsman program which will help you find out what your rights and responsibilities are. For Medicaid you are allowed to own your own home, but nothing which could produce an income, a single mode of personal transportation [but there are limits on the value of this], and personal household items. Also, if you use Medicaid [Medical in California] when you die they can and will attach your estate for reimbursement of monies spent in your behalf meaning that if you own your own home, it will probably be sold to pay them back. Again, find a local senior agency or ombudsman program for details and help applying for benefits.
